Quick Soda Bread

This is a really quick and easy bread recipe, that doesn’t require proofing or much kneading. This is not the classic recipe- I used baking powder instead of baking soda and yoghurt instead of buttermilk and the result was great. The bread is heavy, with a tasty thick crust- a great side for a warm soup or stew.


  • 500g rising flour plus more for dusting*
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 400ml natural yoghurt

*If you use plain flour add a whole tsp of baking powder

Cooking Method:

Turn the oven up to 200C. Line a flat baking tray with baking paper.

Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.Add the yoghurt and mix into a dough.

Take the dough out onto a floured flat surface and knead for a couple of minutes to form a soft ball. Sprinkle a little more flour if it looks too sticky.

Put the bread onto the baking tray, flatten a bit, make two cross cuts into the dough, sprinkle with flour and bake for 40 minutes or until ready (do the skewer test).
